Dog Crates

Overview:  Crates are great for potty training, traveling and more.  I've purchased numerous crates over the years for my home, training facilities, and travel.  I've learned a lot about what works and what gets destroyed and chewed up by powerful dogs.  Make your crate decision based on your purpose, use, and dog type.  Foldable metal-wire crates have become my go-to style over the years for basic use like Midwest's iCrate. I've found single-door crates save money and are all I have ever needed.  If you plan to fly your dog on vacation, you will need a TSA approved crate such as the Petmate Sky kennel or the Petmate Veri kennel.  If you are purchasing a crate for a puppy, you will want one with a moveable divider.

Puppy Crates:
These crates are designed specifically for growing dogs.  You should purchase a crate based on your dog's expected adult size.  You will then start with the divider moved forward, making the crate smaller, and gradually move the divider back to increase crate space as your dog grows.  This is absolutely key for potty training.  Dogs don't like to go to the bathroom where they sleep or lay down.  So making the crate small enough they feel like there is only enough space to lay down comfortably, paired with taking them outside frequently and rewarding them for going outside, is how you should properly potty train.

Light Duty Crates:
These crates are a great budget friendly option that will suit most dogs and owners.  Light-medium duty, single-door, non-TSA approved.

Medium Duty Crates:
These crates work for most all dogs, however if you have a very powerful or strong dog, you may consider the heavier duty crates.

Heavy Duty Dog Crates:
These crates work for almost all dogs, even heavy chewers and powerful ones.

Dog Crates for Flying:
These crates meet TSA requirements.  However, if you do not plan on flying,  metal-wire crates may be a better option for strong dogs or powerful chewers.  I have had numerous German Shepherds destroy plastic crates when used for non-flying applications.
